Hi. Hello. OK.
I'm Dan.

I’m an art director and designer based in Chicago. Over my 10-year freelance career, I’ve worked with Fortune 100 companies, burgeoning startups, and agencies large and small.  My work centers on interactive visual design and branding, with a healthy dose of user experience and a pinch of illustration. I enjoy making and breaking boundaries, putting everything in its right place, staring at walls, and not writing about myself.

Branding

Table XI

The fine folks at Table XI asked me to take a stab at rebranding their agency. While their focus is mainly on user experience research and custom software development, they also do an amazing job of enriching the design community with extracurricular offerings that all live under the TXI umbrella.

To mirror that mindset, I developed an expansive, systemized color palette and custom illustration style that goes far beyond a logomark. Using their core tenets of gracefulness, inclusion, and confidence, I created a bespoke brand system that can handle anything that gets thrown at it, from website to office design.

NowSecure

At mobile security startup NowSecure,, I served early on as in-house Creative Director,  navigating a renaming and rebranding, and leading the UI design of multiple product launches.

In my two years at NowSecure, I oversaw the translation of a fantastic initial rebrand by Chicago agency BBG into a robust digital design language on which NowSecure could base its entire suite of product offerings. With users ranging from consumers to independent developers and enterprise software architects, creating a universal interactive design language was a major undertaking that contributed to the completion of NowSecure’s $12.5 million Series A funding round.

Branding

Dabbly

During a two-week design product sprint, inclusive beauty startup Dabbly was born. Our client group of 10 spent the first week dedicated to product line and brand discovery. In the second week, we synthesized workshop findings into  a full-fledged brand identity system, including product applications, custom illustration assets, and a full set of brand guidelines.

Dabbly launched on Indiegogo in Spring of 2020 with a single product focused on sun protection. The company reached 134% of its initial Perk Goal by campaign end.

Dtr

Distributed Research Technologies, or DTR, is a not-for-profit organization focused on cryptocurrency research.

I led a remote creative workshop and synthesized findings into a series of stylescapes. After initial sketches and 2 rounds of concepting, the chosen logo concept communicates concepts of Connectivity, Exchange, and a "d" lettermark. After establishing the look and feel, I created a full brand identity system as well as a custom website.

Avon

This was a big one. Avon, a 150-year-old company, needed to join the digital era. With numerous, disparate online product offerings, their lack of a cohesive digital brand system had become a roadblock for the company and its sales reps. Additionally, the user experience was a direct evolution of a pen-and-paper direct sales model. They needed a makeover.

I helmed the creative team tasked with internalizing the Avon brand and translating it to the digital space. Over the course of two years, I served as Director of Visual Design Systems at S4DC, re-thinking their entire sales rep experience and creating a universal style guide to direct the redesign of all Avon’s digital tools. Their internal team used these guidelines to update marketing properties, the public e-commerce property, and private representative tools. Our design updates not only brought the platforms more up to date, they also improved visual accessibility, strengthened multi-language performance, and addressed responsive browser requirements.

Over the course of S4DC’s engagement with Avon, we successfully designed, developed, and executed the company’s first on-time product launch in 15 years. The company was then able to use these tools to deliver subsequent internal projects ahead of schedule and under budget.
